 Children’s Health

Baby teeth (primary teeth) are very important

Baby teeth start to come in at around 6 months old and reach 20 in number, including top and bottom teeth, by around the age of 3. These are important teeth that will continue to be used until adult teeth (permanent teeth) replace them. Prevent cavities and look after your child’s oral and dental health.

Preventing cavities

Build a regular lifestyle rhythm

By establishing a regular lifestyle rhythm, meals and snacks fall at a set times and this forms an environment in which it is difficult for cavities to form.
Emphasize drinking water and tea.
(Juices, sports drinks and fizzy drinks contain a lot of sugar and are high in acidity, which may result in them dissolving teeth directly.)

Useful Knowledge
  • If children continue drinking breast milk past 18 months, the risk of cavities (especially in the top front teeth) increases
    Prevent cavities using strategies including:
・Limit snack times and cut back on sweets and juices
      ・Use fluoride toothpaste
      ・Get fluoride treatment
・Stopbreast feeding before going to bed
  • Children using a pacifier
・The alignment of their teeth can worsen. Try to lessen their use of a pacifier by about 1 year of age.

The habit of keeping your teeth clean

Help your child nurture the habit of cleaning their mouth before bed.

Getting in the habit of brushing teeth
  • Show them an example of you brushing. Create a lively atmosphere with song and music to encourage them to brush their teeth.
(Make sure your children brush their teeth with an adult present, and watch out for accidents)
  • By continuing every day, the habit will gradually form
How to finish up brushing your child’s teeth
  • Lie the child down on your knees: make sure their head is stable
  • Move their lips aside with your fingers and look at their teeth: check if their teeth are dirty or discolored

Preventing cavities with fluoride

Using fluoride creates strong teeth, resistant to cavities, and helps develop oral health.

Fluoride’s effectiveness in preventing cavities
  • Strengthens the teeth
  • Helps the repair of the teeth (re-calcification)
  • Reduces production of acid that dissolves the teeth
How to use fluoride
  • Fluoride treatment
Results are achieved by taking continuing treatment every 1 to 6 months
Treatment is available at dental clinics and healthcare centers
  • Fluoride toothpaste
The amount of toothpaste to use: the size of a grain of rice for children under 2, the size of a bean from 2 years old
Make them gargle once after brushing their teeth
For children who cannot gargle properly, wipe their mouth with a tissue after brushing their teeth
