Healthy babies are born from healthy mothers. Day by day, a small new life grows inside the mother. In order to give birth to a healthy baby, it is therefore important to maintain a cheerful and healthy lifestyle and obtain correct knowledge about pregnancy and childbirth.
Decide on a Medical Clinic
As you will need to look after your health for the 10 months leading up to the birth of the baby, it is important to make a careful decision regarding the medical clinic or hospital you will use. Make sure you take into account whether they explain things clearly, and how close it is to your house.
Undergo Health Medical Examinations
Even if there are no irregularities in your pregnancy, ensure that you attend regular medical examinations and check-ups, and follow any medical instructions issued to you.
Guidelines for pregnancy examinations
- Until the 23rd week of pregnancy: once every 4 weeks
- From the 24th to the 35th week of pregnancy: once every 2 weeks
- From the 36th week of pregnancy onward: once a week

- Have a check-up at a dental clinic during the stable period of your pregnancy, including an examination of your teeth and gums.
- If you undergo any dental work during your pregnancy, make sure to tell the dentist that you are pregnant and to go when your physical condition is stable.
Returning Home (to One’s Hometown) for Childbirth
- You may need an appointment to be seen, so contact the medical clinic you will be visiting in your hometown in advance.
- Your condition as the mother is important. Choose a smooth method of transport that will not cause stress to your body. Have your family accompany you when returning home.
- Consult your doctor about when might be an appropriate time to return to your family home. About a month and a half to two months before the due date is usually all right, but individual cases differ.
- Take a referral card explaining the progress of your pregnancy to an examination at the hospital that you intend to give birth at. .

Health Check-Ups for Expectant Mothers
It is important to have regular health check-ups when pregnant. Medical examination cards are issued along with the Maternal and Child Health Handbooks to expecting mothers who have registered as residents in Hamamatsu City. These cards will correspond to the period that the mother is registered to be a resident of Hamamatsu. They can be used to receive up to 14 pregnancy check-ups partially covered by public assistance at city-entrusted hospitals and medical clinics.
Dental Health Examination for Pregnant Women
During pregnancy, it is easier for the condition of your mouth to deteriorate and there is an increased risk of cavities and gum disease.
Take an examination at a dentist’s to protect healthy teeth and gums.
