 Recycling household electrical appliances

Information about recycling household electrical appliances

Under the statutes of the Home Appliance Recycling Law of 2001, the disposal of air conditioners, televisions, refrigerators and washing machines cannot be processed by municipal sanitation services. Please follow the steps outlined below when disposing of such items:

Proper electrical appliance disposal procedures as per the Home Appliance Recycling Law

(1) When disposing through the services of an electrical appliance retailer

You can ask the store where you buy air conditioners, televisions, refrigerators, freezers, washing machines or clothes dryers from, or the store where you bought your old appliance from, to take your appliance. You can also ask an electrical appliance retailer or a garbage collection company (one that has permission to collect and transport general waste).
(Both options will involve paying the Recycle Fee plus the fee for collection and transportation.)

(2) When disposing of rubbish by yourself

1. Please confirm the size and the brand of the electronic product that you are disposing of.
2. Pay the Recycle Fee (risaikuru ryokin) at your local post office and obtain a Proof of Payment Certificate (harai komi shomeisho) (You will be charged a payment processing fee.)
3. Bring your appliance to a designated acceptance site along with the Recycle Ticket (risaikuru ken) attached to your Proof of Payment Certificate.

Recycle Fee

The Recycle Fee will vary according to characteristics such as the make and the size of the air conditioner, television, refrigerator, freezers, washing machine or clothes dryer. For more information, please consult the Electrical Appliance Retailers Association website
