A variety of public facilities and services are necessary to maintain our way of life, such as law enforcement, firefighting, roads and parks. To offer such facilities and services, a great deal of money is required, and these costs are paid by everyone. These payments are known as taxes.
In Japan, taxes are divided into two types: national taxes and local taxes. Local taxes include the residence tax, which consists of the municipal tax and prefectural tax. This funds the work of our local prefectures and municipalities and is collected from residents within those regions. It's important to have a good understanding of taxes so that we can create a city that is easy to live in.
