In 2018, an excavation was conducted at the castle tower bailey of Hamamatsu Castle and the results show that there were wide stone walls with steps attached at the southeast corner of the bailey.
A large quantity of tiles was also found discarded in this area.
Judging from their production method and patterns, the excavated tiles were probably produced during Horio’s reign as castle lord (1590-1600).
Thus, it is likely that there was a tiled watchtower in the southeast corner around 1600. However, no such tower was depicted in the seventeenth-century illustration, leading us to think that that tower was destroyed in the early seventeenth century.
During the early period of the Tokugawa shogunate (1603-), the destruction of a tower built by Horio, a high-ranking vassal of the Toyotomi administration, would have symbolised the change in era.
