 Japanese Pension System

Japanese Pension System

Non-Japanese residents are required to pay into a public pension scheme for the duration of their stay in Japan. Everyone between the ages of 20 and 60 is required to enroll in the National Pension System (kokumin nenkin) and pay insurance premiums. However, those who fall into either of the two categories below are exempt from the National Pension System.

(1) Individuals enrolled in Social Insurance (shakai hoken) through their place of work

Such individuals enroll into an Employee's Pension (kosei nenkin). Insurance premium payments are automatically deducted from their salary. If they leave the company then they will have to enroll in the National Pension System.

(2) Spouses dependent on individuals enrolled in an Employee's Pension scheme

They will be regarded as paying into the National Pension System even if they are not actually doing so themselves. If they cease to be a dependent of their spouse or their spouse leaves their company, then they will have to enroll in the National Pension System.
