From FY2009 Hamamatsu City conducted an excavation survey of the ruins of the castle gates and found traces of a building.
From the location where the castle gates are depicted in the 1854 Map of Hamamatsu Castle, there are 4 flat foundation stones between 1 and 1.4 m long and 0.7 and 0.9 m wide, and 2 holes for removing the foundation stones discovered, along with the placement of the posts and size of the gate being confirmed.
Furthermore, they found roof tiles and fish shaped roof tiles along with earthen wall tiles.
On top of the stone walls on both sides of the gate there were traces of plaster that had fallen off, which were used as reference material when researching the appearance of the castle gate in the Edo period.
The 6 gateposts on the foundation stone are arranged along the irregular openings on the stone walls on both sides.
This kind of arrangement can be seen in yagura-mon gates built between the Momoyama period and early Edo period, which allows researchers to deduce that these castle gates carried on the characteristics of ancient castle gates until the end of the Edo period.
The reconstruction of the castle gates is faithful to the original arrangement of the foundation and was built almost directly above the existing foundations.
The stones used are also the same quartzite from the northern part of Lake Hamana.
