Drainage Ditch Beneath the Gates

During the excavation survey that began in 2009, a drainage ditch made with roof tiles was discovered under the gate.

Since there were round tiles being used to narrow the ditch in some areas, it is believed that a drainage system was already in place when the foundation stone existed.

From a cross section of the soil horizon, it can be inferred that the foundation stone was removed after the tiles had been buried in the drain.

The drainage ditch diverges from the rainwater ditch on the west side and is laid out along the stone wall on the south side.

The roof tiles used in the drainage ditch have the same characteristics of those from the early Edo period, but the exact date for the creation of the drainage ditch cannot be accurately defined.
