The area surrounding the tenshudai (foundation of the castle keep) is the tenshu-guruwa, which is different from the core region of the castle, named the hon-maru.
The tenshumon, the front gate to the east, and the uzumimon, the rear gate to the west, served as its entrances and exits.
The tenshu-guruwa spans 56m east-west and 68m north-south, and is noted for the various bends and curves which make up its shape.
This shape is considered to be the result of imitating the natural shape of mountains, and the stone walls are said to retain their original form.
It is also believed that various earthworks were built around the perimeter of the bailey.
Tenshu-guruwa can also be found at the castles of Kakegawa, and Wakayama amongst others, but few truly resemble the bailey of Hamamatsu Castle.
Kakegawa castle was constructed by YAMAUCHI Kazutoyo, a contemporary of HORIO Yoshiharu, the second lord of Hamamatsu Castle.
TOYOTOMI Hidenaga was responsible for the construction of Wakayama Castle, and it can be said that the remains of the Hamamatsu Castle tenshu-guruwa are closely associated with TOYOTOMI Hideyoshi.
