Hamamatsu Castle Ruins

Hamamatsu Castle Ruins

Hamamatsu Castle was built by TOKUGAWA Ieyasu as a base for his capture of the Enshū region.

He began living there in June 1570 and stayed for 17 years.

The base covered 600m east-west and 650m north-south with a large gate, the Ōtemon, facing the Tōkaidō to the south (an important route connecting Kyoto to what is now modern-day Tokyo).

From east to west the san-no-maru (third bailey), ni-no-maru (second bailey), hon-maru (main bailey) and castle foundation are located in sequence, with each one progressively increasing in height.

These are the remains of the tenshu-guruwa (castle keep bailey).

After Ieyasu, successive generations of feudal lords served in the castle and many of them rose to the rank of senior councilor during their tenure, with one of the well-known advisors being MIZUNO “Echizennokami” Tadakuni.

The sturdy nozura-zumi style stone walls (built with natural stones) retain the characteristics of their original state and are listed as one of the cultural sites of Hamamatsu City.
