During an excavation of the Hamamatsu Castle bailey in 2018, a stone wall was discovered in the ground of the southern side of the bailey.
Based on the production method, the wall is estimated to have been built during Horio’s reign as castle lord (1590-1600).
Including the upper portion which has now been lost, the wall was 3.2m tall.
However, they were depicted as 1m tall in the seventeenth-century illustration.
The ground of the bailey was probably lower when the castle was first built and 2m of soil was filled in during the early seventeenth century.
In the illustration from the seventeenth century, in addition to stone walls, earthen walls with wooden roofs were drawn.
But in the illustration from the nineteenth century, the earthen walls were depicted with the tiled roofs.
These tiles were probably specially made for the earthen walls because they are different from other tiles.
These findings tell us the structure of the earthen walls changed with the passage of time.
