The door and pillars of the iron gate, as the name suggests, was thought to have been made out of iron.
It was an important gate as it was the main exit and entrance to the main bailey, with a tower on the upper part just like the castle gate.
Illustrations from the early Edo period (top left) depict a square space inside called the “Koguchi” (“Tiger’s Den” a space where soldiers could attack the invading enemy by surrounding them in every direction).
It is thought to have had an effective defensive function.
The iron gate was here until 1872 when it was sold by the government and lost.

It is situated at the east sidewalk, marked by a plate.
