The symbol of a new era
Hamamatsu Castle was abandoned in the Meiji Period (1868 – 1912), and the buildings and land on the castle grounds were sold to private interests. Most of the grounds were used for urban development, with the exception of the main keep enclosure and main bailey. Government agencies such as Hamamatsu City Hall were consolidated around Gosha Shrine.
Beginning with the relocation of Motoshiro Elementary School to the grounds of Hamamatsu Castle in 1948, many other facilities involved in administration, culture, and education have been built in a cluster around the castle since 1950, including the city hall, public gymnasium, swimming pool, zoo, library, museum, and so on. In 1958, the main keep of Hamamatsu Castle itself was rebuilt. In 1979, the competition swimming pool was dismantled, then the zoo and gymnasium were relocated or removed, and in 2018 Motoshiro Elementary School was relocated to make way for Hamamatsu Chubu Junior High School.
In 2014, the main keep gate was rebuilt, and a park is currently being developed that will utilize the history of Hamamatsu Castle.
