After the Battle of Sekigahara, the Horio clan relocated to Izumo (in modern eastern Shimane Prefecture), where they built Matsue Castle. Hamamatsu Castle and Matsue Castle share certain similarities, such as turrets connected to the main keep, and the addition of a well to the basement. Parts marked “Enshu Hamamatsu no Sato” (made in Hamamatsu of the Enshu Region) were found during work to dismantle and repair the main keep of Matsue Castle, hinting at the connection between Matsue and Hamamatsu.
Archaeological excavations have revealed that a stone wall approximately 3 meters in height surrounded the Hamamatsu Castle main keep enclosure built by the Horio clan. The stone foundation of the southeastern part of the main keep enclosure was especially wide, and many roof tiles have been unearthed nearby, so it appears that a turret once stood there.
It is thought that Horio Yoshiharu built the first full-scale tiled-roof building in Hamamatsu Castle. Many roof tiles with characteristics of the Azuchi Momoyama Period have been excavated in the main keep enclosure and its vicinity. Among the excavated artifacts there were ridge-end tiles bearing the kiri mon (crest with paulownia tree leaves), indicating their connection with the Toyotomi regime.
