This tree is said to have been planted by Ieyasu Tokugawa himself when he was presented a potted mandarin orange tree from the lord of Kishu (now Wakayama Prefecture) when he retired and moved to Sumpu Castle.
Ieyasu planted it in Momijiyama garden inside Sumpu Castle’s main bailey (now Shizuoka City).
Its seedling was presented to Hamamatsu City by Shizuoka City.
The mandarin orange is one type of orange imported from China in the Kamakura period, it is famous for its strong fragrance and bears small fruits with seeds.
