A Message from the Mayor
〈 市長からのメッセージ 〉
Ten (10) Years Since Naotora: The Lady Warlord
In recent years, Hamamatsu has frequently appeared in NHK’s Taiga dramas, but the only series set entirely in Hamamatsu is Naotora: The Lady Warlord. It will soon be 10 years since the series aired, in 2017, and Naotora-chan the Monk of Success, a mascot created to coincide with the drama, will also turn 10 this year.
At the time of the broadcast, approximately 780,000 people visited the Taiga Drama Museum, which opened at the Miotsukushi Cultural Center. This helped foster a renewed appreciation for the region’s history and promoted the glamour of Hamamatsu, starting with Oku-hamanako (the mountainous area to the NE of Lake Hamana).
It has been about 10 years since then. Coincidentally, this year’s Taiga drama is Brothers in Arms, making it a year when Hamamatsu, the city of success where Lord Tokugawa Ieyasu spent 17 years of his life, is once again in the spotlight. This presents the perfect opportunity to widely share the appeal of Hamamatsu, which we reexamined through various projects commemorating the twentieth anniversary of the merger of 12 local municipalities in the Tenryu River and Lake Hamana Region last year.
For these reasons, this year we are organizing a series of initiatives under the label of the 10th Anniversary of Sites Affiliated with Naotora, such as the National Terraced Rice Fields Summit, events at the Kurumeki Terraced Rice Fields related to Naotora, and a Shogi Festival timed to coincide with the Shogi Oui Championship. We invite you all to take this opportunity to tour the sites associated with Naotora Ii and once again experience the region’s charm.
