 Starting to Wean

When to Start

When your baby is about 5 or 6 months old and you start to notice the following things, it’s a sign to start weaning soon.

Their neck has become stable. If you support them, they can sit up.
They show interest in food (they drool)
Even if you put a spoon in they stop trying to push things out of their mouth with their tongue.

Things to Take Care of When You Begin

  • Wash your hands with soap before you start to make the food.
  • Wash and clean the kitchen implements, crockery and ingredients.
  • Do not feed your child mouth-to-mouth.
  • Go at a slow pace, taking note of your baby’s condition and mood

Once You Begin

  • Feed your baby once a day at about the same time.
  • The food should be a soft, pulverized food, similar to potage.
  • Don’ t use seasonings (teach them the delicious taste of the ingredients).
  • Start from rice porridge, which is easily digestible.
  • Starting from one spoonful once a day, gradually increase the amount.
  • Once they are used to it, gradually introduce new ingredients, starting with pureed vegetables, then moving to tofu and then to white fish.
  • Give them only as much milk as they need.
  • Once they become good at swallowing, feed them two times a day (about a month after starting).

A Menu for Weaning

Start~

Rice / Quick and Easy Rice Porridge
Ingredients Slightly more than 1/4 cup rice (approx. 40g)
300cc water
Method 1. Put water or boiling water in rice. When it comes to the boil, simmer it on a low heat with the lid closed for 20 to 30 minutes.
2. Remove from the heat. Steam for 7 to 8 minutes.
3. Mash the rice porridge

 

6 months~

Tofu / Mashed Tofu Salad
Ingredients 10g carrot
10g spinach
25g tofu
1/4 teaspoon sugar
1 tablespoon stock
Method 1. Boil the carrot and grate it. Boil the spinach leaves, and cut them finely.
2. Boil and drain the tofu. Pass it through a sieve. Flavor it with the stock and sugar and add the vegetables from step 1.

 

Fish / White fish ground soup
Ingredients 10g white fish
2 tablespoons stock
A splash of soy sauce
A splash of corn flour (dissolved)
Method 1. Skin and bone the white fish. Add the stock and soy sauce and boil it. Puree it finely.
2. Add the corn flour to the fish paste from 1.

 

7 months~

Bread / Bread puree
Ingredients 1/8 of a slice of bread
50cc milk
Method 1. Take the crusts off of the bread and chop it finely.
2. Put the milk and bread into a saucepan and turn on the heat when the milk is soaked through the bread. Boil well.

 

Egg / Eggy Mash
Ingredients 1/4 egg yolk
20g potato
2 tablespoons stock
Method 1. Hard boil the egg. Take out the yolk and mash it.
2. Boil the potatoes and mash them while still hot.
3. Mix 1 and 2 together. Dilute it with stock.

 

Meat / Boiled pumpkin
Ingredients 20g pumpkin
1 tablespoon stock
A splash of soy sauce
1/2 tablespoon liver paste
Method 1. Remove the pumpkin rind and boil the flesh. Puree well. Put the pumpkin, soy sauce and stock into a saucepan and dilute it with boiling water.
2. Add the liver paste to the mixture in 1.

 

Vegetable / Tomato Salad
Ingredients 20g tomato
1/2 teaspoon grated cheese
Method 1. Peel the tomatoes and remove the seeds. Chop finely.
2. Sprinkle the grated cheese on 1.
