Procedures for Joining the National Pension Scheme

Please do not forget to complete the procedures for entering the National Pension Scheme when you submit your application for foreigner registration.

Foreigner Registration Card, Passport, Pension book (only those who have entered the National Pension Scheme)

When application procedures have been completed, your pension book (a blue book slightly bigger than a passport) will be sent to your home. Please keep this safe.

National Pension Scheme Premiums and Methods of Payment

Premiums

Premiums for the 2010 fiscal year are 15,100 yen per month. Premiums are reviewed each year.

Payment Methods

Bank Transfer

Payments can be made automatically by bank or Japan Post Bank transfer from a specified savings account. Applications for this should be made to the post office or financial institution where you have an account.

Payments at a Bank or Convenience store

Payments can be made at banks or Convenience stores using the payment notice that will be sent to all people who are required to pay.
* Payments cannot be made at Japan Post Bank.

Exemption Applications

There is a system in place that exempts people from making payments when payments are difficult to make due to reasons such as low income, loss of employment or the person having just arrived in the country.

Lump Sum Payment

In cases where a short-term insured person (over 6 months) returns to their home country having not received a pension, a lump sum payment will be paid out depending on the amount of time the insured person paid into the scheme. Procedures should be carried out upon arrival in their home country.

・Application for the lump sum payment
*The application should be obtained from the Senior Citizens Insurance Division of your ward office or the Social Insurance Office before leaving Japan. Bring your pension book, passport and certificate of alien registration to the above places or the Pension Consultation Center if you have any questions.
