When submitting a notification of birth, the infant's name must be written in standard kanji, kanji officially used for names, hiragana or katakana.
A notification of birth must be submitted even if both parents are foreign residents.

When a child is born overseas between Japanese partners or Japanese and non-Japanese partners.

When

Within 3 months from and including the date of birth. (If a birth notification is not submitted within 3 months, Japanese citizenship may be forfeited).

When an unmarried foreign couple or foreign mother has a child.

Procedures for Staying in Japan

Children without Japanese citizenship must apply for permission to acquire status of residence to the Immigration Bureau, Hamamatsu Branch within 30 days of being born.

Foreigner Registration

Children without Japanese citizenship must carry out their foreigner registration at the local city office (Ward Municipal Services Division of each ward) within 60 days of being born.

Home Visits for Newborn Children

Health practicioners and regional midwives are available to pay home visits and consult with parents on child rearing.
Don't forget to include the baby's name and birth weight, your phone number, etc. when submitting the birth notification for your child. (Postcard that came with the Mother- Child Health Handbook).
