Vaccination Methods
Group vaccinations
Group vaccinations are administered at healthcare and community centers, etc.. (In general, please try to receive your vaccinations in the ward where you are currently residing.)
*Vaccination methods may differ per ward. Please make sure to check the
methods for your area before getting a vaccination.
Individual vaccinations
(BCG, DPT(diphtheria,whooping cough,tetanus), DT(Diphtheria,tetanus), Measles Rubella, Japanese encephalitis)
For individual vaccinations, please make a reservation by phone at an authorized medical facility.

*1)Measles & Rubella
Children who have not been vaccinated against measles and rubella, and who fall within the target ages of stage 1 and 2, will be vaccinated according to the schedule above.
Progressive measures
Even children who do not fall under the new system, but are between 2 and 7 1/2 years old (excluding children who fall under the second stage target age group) and have not received the measles and rubella vaccination, can for the time being voluntarily receive a free vaccination. See a doctor soon about getting your child vaccinated.
*2)BCG
The age for municipally-funded vaccinations was changed to less than 1
year old in April 2006. If possible, have your children vaccinated before
they reach 5 months old.
*3)Triple Vaccine
・Children vaccinated with the triple vaccine will not receive a booster of the triple vaccine again but receive a mixed vaccine of diphtheria and tetanus.
・Children who have had the whooping cough prior to receiving the triple vaccine will be vaccinated with a mixed vaccine of diphtheria and tetanus. The number of vaccinations will be twice during the first stage and one booster 12-18 months after finishing the first stage.
*4)Municipally-Funded Optional Vaccinations
The following vaccinations are city-funded (free) optional vaccinations, and not regular vaccinations which are performed according to the Preventative Vaccination Law. If adverse health effects occur, you may apply for relief based on the Pharmaceuticals and Medical devices Law.
- 1.BCG for children over 6 months old but not yet 1 year old.
- 2.Measles and Rubella for children who are over 1 year old but not yet 7 1/2 years old and who do not fall under categories A or B; children who will receive a single antigen vaccine.
- 3.Diphtheria and Tetanus mixed vaccine (children who have had the whooping cough will not receive the triple vaccine but a mixed vaccine of diphtheria and tetanus.
*5)Japanese Encephalitis
・Japanese encephalitis (Nihon nōen): For the initial stage, dry powder cell culture vaccine for Japanese encephalitis (a new vaccine) is administered.
*The conventional vaccine used until now for regular vaccinations against Japanese encephalitis is no longer in production. Please wait for official approval of dry powder cell culture vaccine for Japanese encephalitis for use in regular vaccinations.
・In accordance national government policy, as there have been some cases of serious side effects in individuals who have received inoculation against Japanese encephalitis, at present we cannot recommend this vaccine unhesitatingly.
Vaccination certificate
You will need a copy of your child’s vaccination certificate in case such as moving over seas and studying abroad. The cost is 350yen per certificate.
