Resident Tax (municipal tax & prefectural tax)

Resident tax, determined by your income for the previous year, should be paid to the municipal body under whose jurisdiction you fall on the 1st January. Residents should submit a declaration to their respective municipal body between the 16th February and 15th March.

However, individuals to whom the following applies need not make a declaration:

Individuals who had no income in the previous year
Individuals whose only income was their wage and whose employer have submitted a wage payment report to the local municipal body
Individuals who have completed a Final Income Tax Return

How to pay

Resident Tax can be paid either by automatic deduction from an individual's wages or from one's annual pension or by a payment notice.

Automatic deduction from an individual's wages

Payments automatically deducted from one's wages will be paid monthly from June of one year until the end of May the following year.

Deduction from One's Annual Pension (Special Collection)

Pay from March to February of the following year on pension payment month.

Payment notice

Those not paying by automatic deduction will receive a payment notice from City Hall, which will be sent mid-June.
Payments with payment notices should be made four times a year,
in July, September, November and the following February.

Kei (light) Vehicle Tax

This is a tax payable on the 1st April by all owners of scooters (gendoki-tsuki jitensha ), kei (light) vehicles (cars with yellow number plates) and small two-wheeled vehicles (motorcycles).

The amount should be paid in full by the 5th June using a payment notice.

Scooters (gendoki-tsuki jitensha)

0.05L and below	1,000 yen
0.09L and below	1,200 yen
0.125L and below	1,600 yen

*Registration, disposal and other procedures such as issuing of license plates should be carried out at the Tax Division of Ward Offices.

Kei Vehicles (two wheel)

0.25L and below	2,400 yen

Registration, disposal and other procedures such as issuing of license plates should be carried out at the Association of Kei Vehicle Vendors.

Over 0.25L	4,000 yen

*Registration, disposal and other procedures such as issuing of license plates should be carried out at the Hamamatsu Automobile Inspection & Registration Office.

Kei Vehicles (four wheel)

Family use (travel)	7,200 yen
Family use (transporting goods)	4,000 yen

*Registration, disposal and other procedures such as issuing of license plates should be carried out at the Association of Kei Vehicle Vendors.

You must carry out the appropriate procedures to change your vehicle's registration whenever you change your address, transfer ownership or dispose of your kei vehicle or motorcycle.

Vehicle Tax

This is a tax payable on the 1st April by all owners of cars. The full amount is to be paid by the 31st May using a payment notice. Fourwheel cars with an engine displacement of 0.66L or less (cars with yellow number plates) are considered to be, and therefore taxed as, kei vehicles.

When you dispose of the car after the 1st April an adjusted amount will be paid from the following month.

Cars for Personal Travel

2.0L and below	39,500 yen
2.5L and below	45,000 yen
