The 2nd United Cities and Local Governments (UCLG) World Congress was held at the International Convention Center, Seogwipo City, Jeju, Korea over four days between 28th October and 31st October 2007. Over 1800 representatives from local governments around the world attended the conference, where they debated issues facing cities today during the more than twenty seminars that took place, and also exchanged opinions at receptions and various other events held throughout the Congress.

In addition, over fifty municipalities and businesses, largely from Korea and China, ran promotional booths at the World Urban Fair, which was held as part of the World Congress. Hamamatsu also ran a booth to promote Hamamatsu International Mosaiculture 2009,
where the Mayor himself promoted the event.

The Mayor of Hamamatsu was a panelist in the session on Urban Mobility

Over 20 sessions were held at the 2nd UCLG World Congress, each with a different theme, ranging from local autonomy to world peace.

The Mayor of Hamamatsu, Yasutomo Suzuki, participated as a panelist in the Urban Mobility session, held on the morning of the 30th October, where he gave a presentation on the achievements of the Omnibus Town Plan. The Omnibus Town Plan was implemented by Hamamatsu City to improve the bus system for users, and was designed to make buses, the most widely used form of public transport in Hamamatsu, more convenient.

The Mayor explained how the IC Card has reduced the time taken to get off buses and thus reduced congestion on the roads. The Mayor also introduced the bus location service, which provides information on the location of approaching buses. The other session participants showed great interest in the Mayor’s report.
