Isao Shoda improved upon the traditional circular saw tool by creating an all-purpose woodworking machine during a time when woodworking machinery was just being imported to Japan. In 1968 the worlds first computer-controlled machine was successfully developed. ![]()
Motorcycles
Domestic production of motorcycles began in 1946 when Soichiro Honda began selling bicycles equipped with small wireless engines. There was a period when over 40 automobile makers battled it out in Hamamatsu; currently three companies (Honda, Yamaha, Suzuki) remain. ![]() (equipped with a two-cycle front mounted engine and front wheel drive)
Kei (Small) Automobiles
In 1937, under the direction of Suzukis founder Michio Suzuki, a small automobile was imported for research from England. Later, in November 1955, Suzuki revealed the first automobile equipped with a two-cycle front mounted engine and front wheel drive, called the Suzulight.

Pianos
The first domestic piano was made in 1900 by Torakusu Yamaha, founder of the famous company by the same name. The musical instrument industry went on to flourish in Hamamatsu, and even now the city can boast that all of Japans pianos are produced in Hamamatsu.

Television
During the era of mechanical televisions Kenjiro Takayanagi had his sights set on creating a full-electronic television, then considered next to impossible to develop. He continued with his research alone and successfully projected the Japanese character

Passenger Plane
In 1922, Asao Fukunaga completed the Tenryu 10, Japans first domestic passenger airplane. However, as there were no laws allowing for the transportation of people by airplane at that time, the plane never had the opportunity to transport actual people.

Camera Film
The first film made in Japan, Kiku Film, was created in 1928 by Katsujiro Horiuchi, the founder of Hamamatsus Asahi Shashin Kogyo Company, and Masaharu Kojima, a film researcher. The wrapping paper used for Kiku Film was made domestically, and its use was the catalyst for full domestic production.

Aluminum Wheels
Enkei is a company that got its start supplying parts to Honda and the other motorcycle manufacturers. In 1966 it became the first Japanese company to successfully produce aluminum wheels. Three years later they found themselves exporting 30,000 wheels.
