Japan has its own special varieties of strawberries which differ not only from other countries, but also between regions in Japan. The strawberry orchards in Hamamatsu specialize in cultivating two varieties, known as Benihoppe and Akihime. Strawberry picking season starts in mid-December, and usually runs until the end of May, however, the best time to pick to ensure the sweetest flavour is said to be in January. Mikkabi mikans, on the other hand are the sweetest in mid-November, with its season running from October to mid-December.

Before going strawberry picking, it is best to call ahead to book and check as prices and times may change, depending if there are strawberries in stock. Be sure to leave early, especially on weekends and peak season, as the orchard may be picked clean before noon!
When you arrive, you will be given a special tray, one side filled with condensed milk (to dip your strawberries in), and the other side to place your strawberry leaves (see photos). Tip: When plucking strawberries, grasp the stem just above the berry and pull with a slight twisting motion.

As the winter in Hamamatsu can get chilly, its easy to pack on a few layers of clothing. However, as you will be picking strawberries in a greenhouse and racing to find the plumpest and juiciest ones, you will probably break a sweat, so best to wear a little less than youre used to. You dont want your down jacket to slow you down! Also, remember to wear comfortable casual shoes, and best to avoid sandals or high heels! Although 40 minutes of all you can eat strawberries may seem quite short, you would be surprised how quickly you fill up. So to make the most of it, you may want to skip breakfast and go on an empty stomach. An insiders tip - the best time to go is the day after it rains, as the strawberries are the sweetest at this time.
Happy hunting in Hamamatsu!
