Hamamatsu may be well known for its musical and manufacturing industries, producing international brands such as Yamaha and Suzuki, but did you know that Hamamatsu is also abundant in lush greenery and clear waters? Very rare would you find a Japanese city that is surrounded by a river (Tenryu River), the sea (Enshu Sea), a lake (Lake Hamana) and mountains (Akaishi Mountains).
This unique blend of nature makes Hamamatsu an ideal spot for an array of outdoor and marine sports. Whether you are the adventurous spirit looking for that extra thrill, or just want to lay back and enjoy the serene sights, Hamamatsu has something to suit your tastes.
Summer is the perfect time to make the most of the many marine sports on offer, and even some that you might not have come across before. In the waters of Lake Hamana, you can try parasailing and windsurfing. If youd like to be more in control, there are speedboats, aero spiders, or motorized paddle boats. You may have heard of

speedboats, but what are aero spiders? Aero spiders are a new type of speedboat that can accommodate up to 10 people. It is run by a horizontal motor and is the first of its kind. For those that really want to get into the waves, you can also try the banana boat or tube rodeo. A banana boat is a large floatation device shaped like a banana which can seat up to 6 people, and is attached to the end of a speed boat which pulls you along the water attempting to unseat its passengers. A tube rodeo is similar, but instead of being shaped like a banana, it is similar to a round tire seating one passenger each.
On the calmer side of Lake Hamana, kayaking is also available, not only during the daytime, but kayaking in the sunset or sunrise will no doubt leave you with fond memories of this city. An increasingly popular sport known as kiteboarding has found its home in Hamamatsu. With its infamous
karakaze wind, a dry strong wind that is present all year round, and home to one of the longest stretches of beach in Japan, Hamamatsu has attracted many kiteboarding enthusiasts. Whether youre a beginner or professional, regardless of your age, anyone can enjoy a full day out in the waves.
For the more relaxed spirit, you can hire a bicycle and cycle around the lake, take a stroll in the Hamamatsu Garden Park, ride a cable car to enjoy the panoramic views or take a romantic boat cruise with your partner.
Of course, in Hamamatsu you can also enjoy the more traditional sports such as taking the Tenryu Kudari a boat ride down the rapids of Tenryu River, complete with a commentary about the history of the area whilst enjoying the breathtaking views around you. Or there is takiya fishing, a traditional type of torch fishing at night, where you can also enjoy the fresh taste of your catch.
Whatever tickles your fancy, be sure to visit Hamamatsu and experience it for yourself!
