I became Mayor in May 2007 and since then, together with our 820,000 residents, I have been working towards making Hamamatsu a vibrant and exciting city.
Hamamatsu City is a new city, formed by the merger of twelve cities, towns and villages in July 2005. In April 2007 Hamamatsu became an ordinance-designated city, with financial and administrative authority equivalent to that of a prefecture.
Hamamatsu has many foreign residents, notably Brazilians, as well as many Japanese residents who have experience of working overseas, making Hamamatsu a truly global city.
We are implementing a wide range of initiatives as part of efforts to create a City of Music, based on our musical instrument industry. These initiatives, such as the Hamamatsu International Piano Competition, are designed to nurture world-class musical talent and develop the role of musical culture in residents` everyday lives.
We are making the most of these unique characteristics in order to make Hamamatsus presence felt in Asia, and in the world.
