Welcome to Hamamatsu City`s official homepage. I am Yasutomo Suzuki, the Mayor of Hamamatsu.I became Mayor in May 2007 and since then, together with our 820,000 residents, I have been working towards making Hamamatsu a vibrant and exciting city.
Hamamatsu City is a new city, formed by the merger of twelve cities, towns and villages in July 2005. In April 2007 Hamamatsu became an ordinance-designated city, with financial and administrative authority equivalent to that of a prefecture.
As a “City of Manufacturing” and a “City of Industry”, Hamamatsu has produced many world-renowned companies, such as Suzuki, Honda, Yamaha, Kawai, Roland and Hamamatsu Photonics.
Hamamatsu has many foreign residents, notably Brazilians, as well as many Japanese residents who have experience of working overseas, making Hamamatsu a truly global city.
We are implementing a wide range of initiatives as part of efforts to create a “City of Music”, based on our musical instrument industry. These initiatives, such as the Hamamatsu International Piano Competition, are designed to nurture world-class musical talent and develop the role of musical culture in residents` everyday lives.
We are making the most of these unique characteristics in order to make Hamamatsu’s presence felt in Asia, and in the world.
