Largest Population in Shizuoka Prefecture
When Hamamatsu became a municipality in 1911 its residents numbered only 36,782. The population began to increase due to municipal mergers, births, and relocations, and reached 500,000 in 1982. Such growth is rare for cities that are not the seat of a prefectural government nor located near a metropolis. With the merger of 2005, Hamamatsu became the largest city in Shizuoka Prefecture, with a population of over 800,000.

A Balanced Industrial Structure
The number of people employed in Hamamatsu’s primary industries is 5.4%, a higher figure than other designated cities. The percentage of workers in its secondary industries is also comparatively high. This is because industries are well balanced against the region’s rich natural environment, showing that Hamamatsu has the characteristics of a city following an independent and self-contained model.
